When the E-Mu E4 series was out it was way beyond my price range trying to afford NYC rent.

I used a Roland DM-80 as my multitrack and a little later the DM-800.

I still remember Pro Tools when it was Sound Tools and the Akai S1100 was the bomb. However there's an universe of sounds waiting for discovery but it is so hard to see! I am one of those guys who I guess is a little older than some here. I've read Gearslutz member 'Balma' posts with great interest since he can get awesome results using romplers with reasonably simple techniques. Personally I've tried to program some patches with some effects unit interaction but it's more complicated than I thought. I'm really interested in hearing how do you find the sampler after some use. I tried to hunt one but finally gave up and got K2500+KDFX instead. However, a more streamlined Emulator 5, featuring great sound quality in the box and 8 outputs priced along the lines of an Octatrack might do really well.Ĭongratulations indeed. A behemoth in size, features, and price like the E4 series is a dinosaur and not a viable business in the age of the laptop. Can you imagine with the talent they had what they could come up with for a hardware Emulator 5 series? Elektron has shown the way in this new era that hardware can have its place. I keep having this fantasy that Creative Labs will sell off E-mu and allow them to once again build real hardware that people actually want.

As others have noted in this forum, I'm seeing this more and more across the 80's/90's hardware marketplace. There seems like there could be a few E-Mu hoarders operating on Ebay snatching up moderate-level Ultra units and pricing them as premium. Present Ebay Ultra inventory is WAY overpriced IMO and feature rich units on Craigslist have been lacking or sellers only wanting to deal locally. I have been shopping around for months now looking for the right unit.
